American Bulldog

Buyers Beware!

Over the past five years the American Bulldog, breed has grown in popularity and the price has soared; A corresponding increase in the number of so called breeders has incurred. This influx in profit-driven breeders has led to a number of practices that threatens the very existence of the breed as it has been known for many years. The Infusion and cross-breading of other dog breeds, have and are being done, thus creating a diversity of American bulldog-type mongrels flooding the market and bilking the public. These dogs are being marketed as "American Bulldogs" both Johnson and Scott type" by many, this is very confusing to all of us at best.

Beware there are many different types of so called American Bulldogs out their! Some breeders are infusing English Bulldog, bull mastiff, Bordeaux, Pit Bull, Catahoula Cur and Boxer into the American Bulldog. Then they find a dog registry that will take them or create one. Now American Bulldog problems are more than ever, selecting the right breeder is critical, in terms of HONESTY, dog type and health. It is becoming increasingly evident that unless serious efforts are made to preserve the American Bulldog, it is destined to join the ranks of numerous other breeds who original purpose and abilities have been reduced to legend.

They will tell you that they are experts and know all about the breed, breeders and breeding,  IN fact they will tell you anything to sell you a American Bulldog.  Don't you believe it.  Check Them Out!!.

Before you purchase a American Bulldog

Research the different American Bulldog Registries Standards,
Compare the different SIZES, and EYE colors of American Bulldogs. Get Pictures of the dogs you are interested in, their parents, hopefully their great grandparents. Find the type of American Bulldog you like.  Ask yourself  "is looks more important than health," some American breeders think so...  There are more and more American Bulldog Registries being created each year.  It is alright if they are honest about it, admit what's in the MIX then stand fully behind your Bulldogs...  My Complaint is that they  claim they are ALL called American Bulldogs.

1. Make sure it is the type you want. i.e. picture- Performance/Standard type  or Classic/Johnson  type,  Long or short nose,  Brown, Blue, Green or Yellow eyes? Did you know that Blue eyes or Yellow eyes are a fault in our breed standard and these dogs are not quality specimens. So educate yourself on the Breed Standard for the American Bulldog and decide if what you are looking at meets that standard.

2. Search for a Reputable Breeder to buy from.  Do you think it wise to buy from a man who makes his living selling American Bulldogs.   Only buy from a breeder who knows their stock as well as the pedigrees and ancestry behind their dogs.... Most American Bulldog breeders talk the talk, but only a few walk the walk. Check Us Out.

3. Ask for some names of People and their phone numbers. Call these folks and see what they say about his American Bulldogs, and the Breeder.  It takes  a little extra effort on your part it will be worth it many times over.  A good Performance American Bulldog lives 10 to 16 years.  Find the best one you can.

Most Importantly

4. Have the breeder carry the pup you have selected to the Vet. for a complete check up, eyes, hearing, fecal exam and Hip X-Ray.  You should be willing to pay for this Vet. visit.  Personally call the Vet and talk about the pups check-up.  Confirm he checked the right pup.  This cost is usually around $100.00, and worth every penny of it. If you do not do this your new pup could infect your yard and other pets with worms.  Or you could have bought a pup with Hip Dysplasia and have to put him down before he is a year old.  It has been said by many that 80% of all American Bulldogs are Dysplastic!  Do you want a deaf pup, or one with bad eyes.  Bottom line don't take the breeders word and make the mistake that most people do...

A guarantee is only as good as the person offering it. Think about return air freight, you'll pay.  How can you make them HONOR their GUARANTEE, get an attorney in their state? When purchasing a dog over the Internet or telephone you don't get to see the breeder in person.  Normally you don't get to see his/her dogs or how he/she treats them. "You only here his words." Is he a man/woman of integrity? Will HE/SHE go above and beyond the call of duty to do what is right  Some breeders say that they have replaced dogs that other breeders would not stand behind!  Now isn't that nice!!!  Perhaps they replaced them because they could not sell them.
